World Cup Cricket begins on Saturday, Feb 19

ICC World Cup 2011The event the cricket world awaits every four years, the “olympics of cricket” so to speak, has arrived.  Fourteen (14) teams, divided in two groups of 7, vie for the covetable World Cup.

Group A

Australia,  Canada,  Kenya, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe

Group B

Bangladesh,  England,  India, Ireland, South Africa, Netherlands, West Indies

Fixtures

In the first round, each team plays the other 6 teams in its group. The first round schedule for the West Indies is:
  • Feb 24, 2011 (04:00AM Eastern) vs South Africa —
    • they’re better on paper because of they are far more consistent and disciplined.
    • West Indies give them trouble and beat them once when we were not expected to.
    • West Indies has Chris Gayle but which Gayle will show up?
  • Feb 28, 2011 (04:00AM Eastern) vs Netherlands —
    • West Indies are much better on paper and should win.
  • Mar 04, 2011 (03:30AM Eastern) vs Bangladesh  —
    • West Indies are much better on paper and should win.
  • Mar 11, 2011 (11:00PM Eastern) vs Ireland —
    • West Indies are much better on paper and should win.
  • Mar 07, 2011 (04:00AM Eastern) vs England —
    • West Indies are matched up evenly but they’ve gotten the better of the West Indies recently.
  • Mar 20, 2011 (04:00AM Eastern) vs India —
    • India is superior batting-wise but West Indies have had good success in recent years.

Fortunately, 2 of the 3 teams that have demolished the West Indies recently in the one-dayers, Australia and Sri Lanka, are in group A.  Of course we can beat them but Gayle has played poorly and/or inconsistently in those  matches.  Again, how well the West Indies fares depends a lot on the play of the former captain.  Other factors are that, if he plays well, he gets batting support from at least 2 other players (e.g. Barath and DM Bravo or Sarwan and Chanderpaul), excellent fielding, and above-average bowling.
