Reggae Boyz beat CAN 3-2, qualifies for Copa America

Looking for something positive since taking over as Technical Director of Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz team a year ago, Heimir Hallgrimsson found it in a bold half time change last night, leading to a 3-2 win over Canada in Toronto, Canada, and cementing their spot into the Nations League semi-finals and Copa America.

The Canadians were in good shape after a 2-1 win in Jamaica and leading 1-0 in the return match at halftime. However, Hallgrimsson, desperate for a spark, moved Center Back Damian Lowe to Midfield and it paid off. Lowe assisted on the first Jamaican goal and “assisted” on the 3rd by making a cross that hit off the hand of the Canadian player in the 18-yard box, resulting in a penalty which was easily dispatched by Bobby Reid.

Some not-so-good things happened in the match also:

  1. Jamaica was dominated in the first half and were down 0-1
  2. Coach only made the one good substitution and made two others only due to injury
  3. Bailey is putting too much pressure on himself and missed 2 more shots within 12 yards, adding to the 3 missed in the 1st game.
  4. Gray got a second yellow and was red carded so he will miss the next game
  5. Gray needs to temper his anger when it appears a referee is against the team or things are not going so well

Congrats to the Reggae Boyz and their coaching staff. We hope the coaching staff and the team learn from this one and build for the future.
